May 16 - Pre-Party for the Tour of Homes

On Friday, May 16, from 5:00 -7:00 pm, a Tour of Homes Kickoff Party will be held in Brevard's Straus Park at a magnificent stone home just made for parties. Guests may browse through the house, enjoy the garden's seating area and fire pit, listen to live music and enjoy the catered hors d'oeuvres. This home is not included on Saturday's tour, so be sure to buy tickets to this entertaining fundraising event. Tickets to the Kickoff Party are $50.

On Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm, the Spring Tour of Homes will offer magnificent views, stunning homes, and fascinating art studios. The homes on this self-guided tour are located in Brevard, Connestee and surrounding areas. Some of Brevard's master-gardeners will participate with flower arranging demonstrations, and we have Plein Air artists who will be doing painting demonstrations in the gardens or on the decks of some of the homes. For those wanting to eat lunch on the tour please call Maple Restaurant at 884-4841 to make your reservations. They are located at 204 Main Street. (A percentage of your lunch bill will be donated to TC Arts Council)

Mossin Annie will present a free program on Moss Gardens at 11:00 am at TC Arts with a power point presentation. Following this presentation (11:30 am - 2 pm) Annie will be making moss dish garden (there is a charge to make a dish garden - kids $10 adults $20).

Gail Comer - a local Master Gardener will present a free program on herb gardens starting at 9:30 am at TC Arts. She will focus on culinary herbs and be here throughout the day.

The Transylvania Community Arts Council is offering a one-week Summer Art Camp from June 23 through 27 at the Transylvania Community Arts Center in Brevard. Children ages 5 to 12 may participate in either a morning session, from 9 a.m. to noon, or an afternoon session, from 1 to 4 p.m. During each three-hour session of Art Camp, children will rotate through three arts stations. Children will be grouped according to age. The camp fee is $50 per child for the week. Snack time is included. World renowned scientist and scholar, Dr. Cayenne Chardonnée and The Guerrilla Divas present another of their semi-occasional evenings of informative, quixotic, exotic, peculiar and entertaining seminars in “The Natives are Restless: Tour A Broad or Ethnomusicology Ain’t What It Used to Be”. This event will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 7:00 PM at the TC Arts, on Caldwell Street.Dr. Chardonnée, Professor of Comparative Neo-Retro-Nouveau Cultural Ethno-Socio-Archeo-Anthropological Studies at the University of Southern Southern Georgia, has gathered an international group of her academic and musical colleagues to explore the seamier sides of anthropology and ethnomusicology. The seminar will include live exhibits, discussion and music. Dr. Chardonnée will be joined by Miss Honoraria Cheevis, who will enthrall us with her scholarly findings, as well as Miss Aurora Borealis, of Norway, who will share her own interesting discoveries. Even revered icons like John Philip Sousa, whose landmark work, “Airs from Many Lands,” will be an unforgettable exhibit of anthropology at its most naïve. The evening should prove to be an informative and fun for all.

Dr. Chardonnée’s past appearances in Brevard have sparked rave reviews and unprecedented enthusiasm. The staff at the Brevard Antique Mall has declared the Guerrilla Divas “The bee’s knees.” “I wouldn’t miss seeing it!” says Harvey Miller, professor emeritus of Brevard College.

Composition Studio for the Serious Beginner - Oil Painting with Virginia Pendergrass

Composition Studio for the Serious Beginner lead by Virginia Pendergrass is a 2-day workshop for beginning oil painters who want to understand important elements of composition in successful oil paintings as a framework for life-long improvement of their own artwork. After an introductory discussion of the topic of composition, illustrated by analysis of images of successful paintings, the students will have opportunities to apply selected composition strategies in designing her/his own original oil painting. Each student will receive feedback from the instructor and class using the composition concepts discussed at the beginning of the class. Students will use the Plein Air landscape as reference material, unless the weather is inclement, in which case students will paint from their own photos. Cost of the class is $145 for both days. ARTIST’S STATEMENT by Virginia Pendergrass

As a contemporary impressionist, I strive for identifiable subject matter rendered with loose brushwork and exuberant color to show my experience of the natural beauty of landscapes, still life or figure. I often paint ‘en plein air’ to preserve the freshness of color, light and natural forms, or from life subjects in the studio. ART TRAINING: Art training includes Crealde School of Art, Winter Park, FL; Valencia Community College, Orlando, FL; Old Lyme Academy of Art, Old Lyme CT; Scott Christensen’s Intensive 10-day Workshop.
